TIMELINE

The rumah ibu of the house was originally built for a Tok Taib who was a person of note in Kampung Paya Takong.

When the latter passed away, this structure was sold to Penghulu Abu Seman, who was the local headman of Mukim Bagan Samak, Bandar Baharu, Kedah.

He then dismantled and moved the house to kampung Sungai Kechil in 1924. The balai was probably added in the 1930s.

In the year of 1995, family of Penghulu Abu Seman sold the house to Badan Warisan Malaysia.

From 1996 to 1997, the house was rescued, restored and relocatedto the heart of Kuala Lumpur by Badan Warisan Malaysia.

INTERIOR SPACE DIVIDERS:

Rumah Penghulu Abu Seman is raised up by pillars to three different level according to the space usage. The highest level is the Ruman Ibu (main house), second level is the Balai (hall) then follwed by the Rumah Tenggah (middle house.

The higher the level of a particular space, the more important that particular space is.

TRADITIONAL MALAY HOUSE INTERIOR SPACES :

Basically, traditional malay house is divided into two main parts, which are the front and the back portions, RUMAH IBU (the main house) and the RUMAH TENGAH (middle part of the house)  respectively.

But in Rumah Penghulu Abu Seman, the BALAI (hall) is acted as the third main part of the house.
