MALAY TABOO
A TABOO is a vehement prohibition of an action based on the belief that such behavior is either too sacred or too accursed for ordinary individuals to undertake, under threat of supernatural punishment.
in malay culture, TABOO is malay’s belief in the past regarding some of their culture and custom derived from their ancestors revealed verbally throughout hereditary.
DURING HARI RAYA AIDILFITRI...
Have a Hari Raya bath in the morning (before prayer) on the 1st day of Hari Raya, to recite in the heart that we bath for the eid.
Wear brand-new traditional clothing with glooming & have the same colour themes for the family.
Eat before coming out from home & fasting is not allowed on the 1st day of Hari Raya.
Walk to the mosque & use a different way to go and back from the mosque.
Males will go to the mosque to perform solat aidilfitri together with all the villagers.
Greet and pray for each others.
Open house & also visit relatives and friends to strengthen good relationship.
Ask for forgiveness for all the mistake you make throughout the year. ou.
Keep the traditions alive. Make and serve compulsary dishes such as ketupat, rendang, lemang and so on.
Adult giving out green packets (duit raya) to the young.
Always receive or take something with right hand.
Light up pelita in the evening to celebrate 27th night of Ramadhan (malam tujuh likur).
Not to wear excessive makeup such as eyeshadow, blusher, mascara, coloured contact lens and lipstick. ick
Handshake between men and women is prohibited during house visiting. Just nod and smile instead.
Not to show off buying expansive and unnecessary things during hari raya.
Cannot sit on pillow as it can cause boil (carbuncle on the buttocks)
Cannot play hide and seek during dawn as you can be hid by the evil spirit.
Do not open umbrella in the house as the snake might enter to your house or lightning may struck upon you.
Avoid sweeping the floor when visitors are coming to our house because the luck (rezeki) can be discarded or cast away.
Avoid keep changing seat while eating as you might end up having many husbands in future.
Canot to sit on stairs because no one will come to propose you.
Do not cut your nail at night time as it can shorten your life.
When you see/visit a new born baby, do not praise him/her as what he is looked like. You must give an apposite wishes so that the baby will appear in good manner in the future.
Do not cross your leg as you are wishing your mom to die soon.
Do not sing while cooking as you will marry to an much older man.
Bride and groom are expected not to meet with each other a week before wedding ceremony as they can ‘hilang seri’ Must give ‘salam’ when entering an empty house as it can cast away the unseen entity.
Actually, purpose of these TABOOS are just to teach people especially the younger generation so that they get good moral values in their lives.
