`Gable roof  is the generally triangular portion of a wall between the edges of intersecting roof pitches.

`The shape of the gable and how it is detailed depends on the structural system used, which reflects climate, material availability, and aesthetic concerns

`The gable roof is most efficient in its ventilation properties.

`Its simple funnel shape, the use of ventilation grilles at its gable ends (tebar layar), and the use of ventilation joints allow good ventilation of the roof space which cools the house effectively.

`The roof is simple and easy to construct, and this partly explains the popularity of this houseform among the poorer villagers and those who build houses themselves.

`is a stairstep type of design at the top of the triangular gable-end of a building.

`The top of the parapet wall projects above the roofline and the top of the brick or stone wall is stacked in a step pattern above the roof as a decoration and as a convenient way to finish the brick courses.

Early examples, from the 15th century onwards, are found in Denmark, England, Estonia, Germany, Latvia, Lithuania, Switzerland, and Sweden.

Crow-stepped gables were also used in Scotland as early as the 16th century.

Examples of Scottish crow-stepped gable can be seen at Muchalls Castle, Monboddo House, and the Stonehaven Tolbooth, all late 16th- and early 17th-century buildings. Crow-stepped gables are also common on Danish medieval churches.

FRONT-GABLED

SIDE-GABLED

Front-gabled building faces the street with its gable

Side-gabled building faces it with its cullis, meaning the ridge is parallel to the street.

Side-gabled buildings are considered typical for German city streets in the medieval gothic period, while later Renaissance buildings, influenced by Italian art are often side-gabled. In America front-gabled houses as the Gablefront house were popular primarily between the early 19th century and 1920.

Characteristics

Gable roofs are the cheapest and simplest type of roof to construct.

Gable Roof

They are more practical than any type of hip roof.

The shape of a gable roof is better for water run-off, which in turn prevents the build-up of mold and mildew.

`Durability is probably the biggest one.

`Available in a variety of shapes, sizes, and colors.

`It also has reflective properties, which help to increase the efficiency of heating and cooling systems.

`Not susceptible to mold or rot, can withstand hurricane-force winds, and does not shrink and expand with the temperature like wood.

Purlin Rafter

Clay Roof Tiles

Purlin is any longitudinal, horizontal, structural member in a roof except a type of framing with what is called a crown plate. In traditional timber framing there are three basic types of purlin: purlin plate, principal purlin and common purlin.
